White lies & the applicants that tell them

It's hard out here. The job market is no joke and we are in a race to get a good job with benefits along with the rest of the world. So what do you do when desperate times call for desperate measures? You lie...well, at least that's what I do. I have over 7 years of work experience, countless leadership positions, and a Bachelors of Science in Biology and Sociology; which I recently learned doesn't really mean shit now a days. I have gone the complete honest route at first. Even stopped myself from applying to jobs that I wasn't qualified for. Well you know what? FUCK THAT! I'm lying from here on out. I'm not saying I'm going to make up jobs or certifications I never had. That's just down right dishonest. But I will tweek somethings to make myself sound important. If a job requires me to type, well then hey, I shall bump my actual WPM up a couple digits. If they want their applicant to be a mentor, well then hey, those kids I told not to do drugs randomly will be thrown into my resume. If the employer wants the applicant to have supervisor experience, well then hey, I have babysat before and that's supervising. It's a cold world out here folks and I'm going to do what I got to do to get my slice of that 401k. I'm applying to EVERYTHING on monster and careerbuilders. "Want to manage a restaurant and gain a wealth of knowledge on the food industry" SUUUUURE *click send resume* "Have experience doing blood work with elderly patients" HEY I CAN DO THAT *click send resume* "Want to make a great living doing hair in a fast growing salon" DON'T MIND IF I DO *click send resume* It's not a game y'all. I'm not saying follow in my footsteps, because by no means have I ever claimed to be a role model (ok I really did claim that in my resume, but stay focused to the point I am trying to make) but sometimes you have to do what you have to do to survive. Darwin elaborated on survival of the fittest and I am stretching it a little bit to say get that job by any means necessary. Shout outs to Malcolm.

  1. I feel you on this this one. I mean, seriously, who knew that having a Bachelor's degree in Biology with several years of work experience didn't mean a damn thing these days. I wish someone would have given me the heads up like five years ago. There are people that went to STRAYER U., KAPLAN UNIVERSITY, hell even UNIV. of PHOENIX that that better job prospects than I do.

I can't tell you how many days I have looked at my transcript and cried. I owe thousands of dollars in student loan payments for a fancy degree that isn't really doing shit for me. I have seriously considered semi-exaggerating on my job apps too, but until today, I thought I would be a horrible person for doing it. Thank you, April, for assuring me that I am not a horrible person at all: I'm just a Loyola grad trying to keep it real.
